What is Consignment?
Consignment is when a store sells someone else's items. The owner of the item keeps ownership until it sells, and as the owner, you’d pay a small fee to the store as compensation for them selling your item.
How it works for the seller
It’s standard for you to drop off your items for a 30-, 60- or 90-day cycle. If your item doesn’t sell within that period, the store will may discount the item by a prearranged amount for a further period, or you will need to pick it up. You can expect to be charged a pre-determined commission which the shop collects as its profit. Everything will be detailed in an agreement so there are no surprises.
Is it worth it?
Generally Stores that consign like ours are very selective about the items that they display in their store and it's only worthwhile if you have quality goods to sell. For clothing and accessories, you really need to have high-end brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, etc. You’ll need fine antique furniture from names like Stickley, Eames, Evans or nearly new high-end pieces preferably from names like Lexington, Hooker or Bernhardt, or even interesting period items like Shaker Art Deco or Mid-Century Modern.
Depending on the market for the goods you consign, it sometimes takes quite a while to see results from consigning, so it’s not a great idea if you need cash pronto. Though on the whole, if your items are of a high-quality and in good condition then they will be well represented amongst the other items in a store, will be seen by a lot of browsing traffic coming through the doors and should sell quickly and for a good price.
